Free mental health training for those supporting others

We’re thrilled to offer a series of free online mental health workshops aimed at those supporting others during the coronavirus emergency. This includes individuals who are helping vulnerable people at home, with their shopping, with medical prescriptions or keeping in touch with those shielding or isolating by phone.

Chris Austin, one of our Directors who has arranged the sessions, said “the work being done to support those who’ve been unable to leave their homes is absolutely invaluable. Those making calls and carrying out visits are a lifeline, especially to those people who may be struggling emotionally with the loneliness of isolation. We hope that our free sessions give those helping others the basic skills and confidence to spot when someone is in need, and to know what to do next.”

The sessions, titled ‘supporting those in need’ are delivered online using the Zoom web-conferencing platform. They’re approximately 1.5 hours long, and cover the following topics…

  • An introduction to mental health;
  • Risk factors;
  • Spotting the signs;
  • Having a supportive conversation; and
  • Seeking professional support.

Tina Cartlidge, from Holmes Chapel Parish Council, took part in one of the sessions with a number of other volunteers. She said…

“The Parish Council operates a support line which is open daily and manned by councillors, officers and volunteers. Recognising the impact the crisis is having on people’s mental health, we felt it was important for those who are answering the support line to feel empowered should someone call who is suffering with their mental health. Through the help of CVS Cheshire East, we were linked to Chris Austin from Edenfield. Chris kindly offered the team a free remote training session covering an introduction to first aid for mental health. Chris packed so much excellent information into the course. He was warm, friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. All those who attended the session found it incredibly helpful and feel far more confident in their role as a result. Thank you to Chris for giving your time to provide such informative training, it was much appreciated”

Edenfield offer training in a range of subjects, including mental health, first aid, health and safety and education and training. Back in March, the team were furloughed when lockdown began and all training ceased. Since then, the business has been finding ways to support others, including the free support sessions and via the COVID-19 NHS Responder scheme, which has seen staff clock up over 1,500 volunteer hours.

With lockdown restrictions now being eased, the company is starting to plan in physical courses, as well as online delivery, for the coming weeks.
