Fire Safety (Level 2)
In 2014/15, fire and rescue services in England attended approximately 496,000 incidents (source: Home Office). Most fires can be prevented by those responsible for workplaces and other buildings taking a proactive approach to adopting the right behaviours and procedures.
This level 2 accredited, nationally recognised course is designed for employees who want to develop their fire safety awareness in order to assist their employer by undertaking more specific fire safety roles in the workplace (e.g. as fire wardens/marshals/stewards etc).
Qualification details and validity
The Award in Fire Safety (England, Wales, Northern Ireland RQF level 2 / Scotland SCQG level 5) has no expiry date, although it is always recommended that learners stay up to date with current practice. The course consists of four contact hours in the classroom, consisting of theoretical and group activities.
Course syllabus
The course syllabus includes… How fires are caused | Cost of fires | Employers’ duties | Role of the fire warden | Fire detection | Raising the alarm | Fire risk assessment | Triangle of fire | Risk control measures | Fire fighting systems | Safe use of equipment
Assessment and certification
Assessment is ongoing by the instructor, along with a multiple choice question paper. The qualification will be issued to those who satisfy the criteria.
Age restrictions and group sizes
A maximum of 16 learners are allowed per instructor and must be a minimum of 14 years of age. An individual cannot assume a responsibility in the workplace until they reach the age of 16, and then it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that the student is suitable for that role.
