Early Years Statutory Framework – Important Changes
The Department for Education (DfE) has recently launched a new Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).This will come into effect on 3 April 2017, and must be followed by anyone responsible for the care, learning and development of children aged 0-5. This includes providers on the Early Years Register and those registered with an early years childminder agency.

Paediatric First Aid
(Page 22 – Paragraph 3.25) Providers must have at least one person who holds a full Paediatric First Aid qualification on site and available at all times when children are present, and must accompany children on outings. Childminders and practitioners who are solely responsible for children for any period of time must also hold this qualification.
The number of children, layout of the premises and the first aider’s ability to respond to an emergency quickly should also be considered when assessing training needs.
(Page 16 – Paragraphs 3.4-3.8) All early years providers must have and implement a policy, and procedures, to safeguard children. All policies and procedures should be in line with the guidance and procedures of the relevant Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB).
A practitioner must be designated to take lead responsibility for safeguarding children in every setting. They must provide support, advice and guidance to any other staff on an ongoing basis, and on any specific safeguarding issue as required. The lead practitioner must attend a child protection training course that enables them to identify, understand and respond appropriately to signs of possible abuse and neglect.
Early years providers must ensure that all staff are trained to understand their policy and procedures for safeguarding. Training made available by the provider must enable staff to identify signs of possible abuse and neglect at the earliest opportunity, and to respond in a timely and appropriate way.
(Page 28 – Paragraphs 3.48) Providers must be confident that those responsible for preparing and handling food are competent to do so. In group provision, all staff involved in preparing and handling food must be trained in food hygiene.
